festival
Verria
Festival instituted in his own honour by Verres while propraetor of Sicily (73–71 BC), supplanting the ancestral Marcellia at Syracuse. Cicero treats the founding of the Verria as a culminating impiety of the propraetorship (In Verrem 2.2).
Reading notes
- Against Verres, Second Hearing, Book II §52 Verria
Verres's grotesque self-aggrandising substitution: a festival in his own name, the contracts for its rites let out for several years in advance and budgeted from public funds across the cities.
