The half-horse, half-man creatures, said in one tradition to have been born of a cloud (Nephele). Cotta cites their cloud-birth in his argument that clouds, storms, and the like would have to be reckoned gods, and elsewhere the Centaur whose blood poisoned Hercules.

The robe Deianira smeared with the blood of the centaur Nessus, who had told her it was a love charm; in fact it was poisoned with the Hydra's venom from Hercules' arrows and burned the hero's flesh. The episode is the climax of the Trachiniae.
