god
Cyclops
also: second Cyclops
The one-eyed giants of Homeric and Sicilian myth, traditionally located in eastern Sicily about Aetna; Polyphemus the best known. Cicero's epithet 'second Cyclops' brands Verres a monster in his own Sicily (In Verrem 2.5).
Reading notes
- Against Verres, Second Hearing, Book V §146 second Cyclops
Cicero's elevation of the standing Sicilian-pirate-monster figures: Verres is not Charybdis or Scylla (one stretch of strait each) but a second Cyclops, who besieged the whole island, and a more monstrous one --- girt with many more hunting-dogs.
