Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon, and wild places (Greek Artemis). Her great cult-statue at Segesta — carried off by the Carthaginians, restored by Scipio Aemilianus after Carthage fell, then removed by Verres — is the standing exemplum of In Verrem 2.4, and her shrine at Perge in Pamphylia is named already at In Verrem 2.1.

The Temple of Artemis (Diana) at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders, said to have burned on the night Alexander the Great was born (356 BC) because Diana was away attending the birth. Cicero credits the witticism to the historian Timaeus.
