Roman god of the underworld (Greek Pluto/Hades), who carried off Proserpina from the meadows near Henna in Sicily. The Hennan myth gives Cicero the geographical and theological frame for the desecration narrative of In Verrem 2.4.

Dis Pater ("the rich father," Greek Plouton), god of the underworld and of the earth's wealth, since all things fall into and rise from the earth. His consort Proserpina is read as the seed-corn hidden underground.
