The Morning Star (the planet Venus), personified in Latin as Lucifer ('light-bearer'). In the Timaeus Cicero pairs it with Mercury as holding a course equal in speed to the sun but with a contrary force.

The planet Venus, called Phosphoros/Lucifer (Morning Star) when it precedes the sun and Hesperos (Evening Star) when it follows. The same body bore two names in antiquity before its single identity was recognized.
