The winged horse of myth whose hoof struck open the Hippocrene spring on Helicon; shown in the sky as the constellation Equus (the Horse), down to mid-belly only. Cicero does not name him but tells his story.

The constellation Equus, the winged horse Pegasus, whose hoof striking Mount Helicon opened the spring Hippocrene ("horse-fount"), sacred to the Muses, watering the land of Thespiae. Only the forepart of the horse appears in the sky.
