Roman fire-god (Greek Hephaestus), husband of Venus; in Sicilian topography his forge was placed beneath Aetna or at Lipara. His shrine and statuary at Lipara and elsewhere figure among Verres's targets (In Verrem 2.2).

Mulciber is a cult title of Vulcan (Greek Hephaestus), the smith-god, here compelled by Jupiter to forge the chains and wedges that pin Prometheus to the rock. The name derives from mulcere, 'to soften' (metal).
