73 BC, M. Terentius Varro Lucullus and C. Cassius Longinus, consuls. The law set up the system of senatorial grain-purchases from Sicily on top of the tithes: 800,000 modii at 3 1/2 sesterces a modius, with the second tithes at 3 sesterces.
