Athenian tragic poet (c. 525-456 BC), the eldest of the three great Attic tragedians. Cicero names him with Sophocles and Euripides as the Greek dramatists whom the Latin poets Ennius, Pacuvius, and Accius imitated.

Aeschylus, the great Athenian tragedian; the tradition (which Cicero reports without endorsing) that he was a Pythagorean is not otherwise well attested. Cicero quotes the bound Prometheus's lament from a Prometheus play attributed to him.
