Mythical Argive hero who killed his mother Eriphyle to avenge his father Amphiaraus and was thereafter pursued and maddened by the Furies. He was a favourite subject of tragedy (Ennius's Alcmaeo), and Cicero cites him as a type of the frenzied man.
