Athenione fugitivorum rege

also: Athenion the king of the runaway slaves, Athenio, Athenion

Athenion, the Cilician slave who in 104 BC led the second great Sicilian slave revolt with Salvius (Tryphon), establishing for some years a rival kingdom in the interior of the island before being defeated by M'. Aquilius. Cicero pairs him with Eunus and Spartacus as a paradigm of servile war (Verr. 2.3.66; 2.2.136 ironically).
