Cicero contemplated taking a legatio (a salaried staff post) under C. Calpurnius Piso, consul of 67 and proconsul of Cisalpine and Narbonese Gaul, partly to court Gallic voters whose votes 'count for much.' This Piso is the provincial governor, not the consuls of 61 or 58 BC.

"Gaius Piso" here is C. Calpurnius Piso, consul 67 (the pacificator of the Allobroges), one of the leading consulars Clodius abused; he is distinct from the sitting consul M. Pupius Piso.
