Gaius Norbanus

C. Norbanus, tribune of the plebs 103 BC (prosecutor of Q. Servilius Caepio), praetor c. 89, governor of Sicily c. 89-88 (in which capacity Cicero cites him for the calm peace of the island during the Social War, Verr. 2.5.8; 2.3.117), consul 83 BC with L. Cornelius Scipio. He was a Marian; after Sulla's victory he fled to Rhodes and killed himself.

C. Norbanus, praetor of Sicily c. 89 BC, sold the tithes by the Hieronic law for substantial sums. Cicero's appeal: Norbanus was no friend of his (a Marian cos 83), but his tithes raised more than Verres's plundering. Verres's claim of "selling for a great sum" doesn't even hold against Norbanus's record.
