Gaius Verrucius, son of Gaius — almost certainly a fictitious name interpolated into the doctored accounts kept by Verres, the second "R" of "Verres" having been written over an erasure to disguise the receipts. The forgery is exposed at Verr. 2.2.187-188.

The forged substitute-name in Carpinatius's account-books at Syracuse: where the entries had originally read "Verres," the V-E-R-R survived, the rest was on an erasure, and a phantom "Verrucius" was put in its place. The image at 191 ("the Verrine tail, as if dipped in mud, sunk into an erasure") is one of the most famous in the Verrines.
