Caesarian officer and senator whom Caesar named suffect consul for the last part of 31 December 45 BC, after the death of the consul Q. Fabius Maximus that same morning; the consulship of a few hours is the butt of Cicero's jokes in Fam. 7.30 and 7.24. Distinct from the Caninius Gallus entities (person:l-caninius-gallus, person:gallus-canius).

Caninius Rebilus --- famous as Caesar's consul "for a few hours" on the last day of 45 BC --- had been a previous owner of one of these gardens. Cicero cites him to establish the property's chain of ownership.

Caesar made C. Caninius Rebilus suffect consul for the last fraction of 31 December 45 BC after the death of Q. Fabius Maximus that morning. Cicero's mordant jokes are that his consulship was over before anyone could lunch under it, and that so vigilant a consul never once slept while in office.
