Gnaeus Aufidius Orestes
Cn. Aufidius
also: Cn. Aufidius, Aufidius Orestes
An elderly senator who in old age adopted Orestes (becoming Cn. Aufidius Orestes, consul 71 BC). Cicero cites the case in De Domo Sua as a proper adoption, contrasting it with Clodius's, where the adopter was younger than the adopted.
Reading notes
- On the Ends of Good and Evil §5.54 Cn. Aufidius, a man of praetorian rank, learned, and blind
Gnaeus Aufidius, a blind former praetor and historian whom Cicero knew. His remark that he missed the light more for its own sake than its use illustrates the natural love of knowing.
