Cn. Sallustius, a literary friend and correspondent of Cicero, frequently mentioned in Ad Quintum fratrem and Ad Atticum in the years 54-44 BC; a sober advisor whose judgement Cicero respected without always following (e.g. on the defence of Gabinius, Ad Q. fr. 3.4). Not the historian C. Sallustius Crispus.

Two distinct men: Gnaeus Sallustius, a literary friend of Cicero, had advanced him cash at Brundisium, while Publius Sallustius was the creditor to whom that sum was now owed and to be repaid through Atticus. The transaction shows Cicero's near-destitution while stranded in Italy.

The salutation is corrupt in all manuscript traditions: the obelus marks the name as unreadable. The proquaestor addressed is identified from context as Cn. Sallustius, who served under Cicero in Cilicia; the transmitted "CANINI" is a scribal garble of some form of his name or title.
