person
Demetrius (of Fam. 16.22)
Demetrius
also: Demetrius iste
A man Cicero mocks in a letter to Tiro of 45 BC, punning on Demetrius of Phalerum and the vulgar name Billienus to call him no philosopher but a rogue. Otherwise unidentified.
Reading notes
- Ad Familiares 16.22 §2 was never really a man of Phaleron at all, but he is now plainly a Billienus
A double pun on names. Demetrius of Phalerum was the model statesman-philosopher; 'Billienus' puns on a vulgar Roman name to say this Demetrius is no philosopher but a common rogue.
