As praetor in 63 BC, L. Valerius Flaccus helped Cicero seize the envoys of the Allobroges (a Gallic people) carrying letters that proved the Catilinarian conspiracy. Hortensius, defending Flaccus on extortion charges in 59, recalled this service and lauded Cicero's consulship.
