King of Syracuse (270–215 BC); a steady ally of Rome through the Punic Wars; framer of the lex Hieronica that governed Sicilian grain taxation under the Roman province.

Hiero (here the famous Hiero of Syracuse, patron of poets) who asked the poet Simonides what god is. Simonides kept doubling the days he needed to answer, finding the question ever more obscure.
