L. Livineius Trypho

Freedman of L. Regulus, commended by Cicero to C. Munatius in Fam. 13.60. Cicero loved him for his own sake on account of great services rendered during Cicero's exile, when Trypho braved many perils and repeatedly sailed in deep winter for Cicero's welfare.

A libertus was a manumitted slave, who took his former owner's nomen (here Livineius, from L. Livineius Regulus) and remained bound to him by ties of duty (obsequium) and clientship. Cicero stresses that he commends Trypho not merely out of regard for the patron but for the freedman's own sake.
