Originally from Catina (Sicily) but enrolled as a decurion at Neapolis; enfranchised along with other Neapolitan residents before the Social War citizenship grants. His brother died recently at Catina leaving an inheritance; he also has longstanding business interests in Sicily. Cicero commends him to the proconsul Acilius Glabrio in 13.30.

Lucius Manlius Sosis had been enrolled in the municipium of Neapolis before the lex Iulia of 90 BC extended citizenship to Italian allies; when citizenship came, he and other enrolees of municipal status were naturalised en bloc. Decurion (decurio) was the rank of a local council-member (ordo decurionum), the municipal equivalent of a Roman senator.
