Roman orator (143-87 BC), consul 99, censor 97; with Crassus the supreme orator of Cicero's youth. Grandfather of Mark Antony the triumvir. Speaker in De Oratore; killed by Marius's partisans in 87.

M. Antonius the orator (cos. 99 BC, grandfather of Mark Antony) prosecuted this Carbo. 'Shoemaker's blacking' (sutorium atramentum) was a caustic black dye; the dark proverb implies the defendant escaped condemnation only by suicide (poisoning himself with it) rather than by a true acquittal.
