M. Claudius Marcellus, consul 222, 215, 214, 210, 208 BC, captured Syracuse 212 BC after a long siege famously prolonged by Archimedes; his triumph filled Roman temples with Greek art (and was thereafter cited as the bad precedent that started Roman art-collecting).

Bronze statues of M. Claudius Marcellus and his line stood in the forums of every Sicilian town; they had spared Syracuse 212 BC and were the patrons of the province for generations. Verres bound the proagorus Sopater of Tyndaris naked to one of these statues in the rain.
