Manius Valerius Maximus

Dictator of 494 BC who, according to tradition, calmed the plebeian secession to the Sacred Mount by his eloquence and was the first to be surnamed Maximus on that account. Cicero (Brutus 54) cites him as evidence that persuasive speech had power in early Rome.
