Menippus

Cynic philosopher and satirist of the third century BC, who blended prose and verse in a comic-philosophical form. Cicero names him as the model (imitated, not translated) for his own Menippean Satires.

Varro's Menippean Satires mixed prose and verse in the manner of the Cynic Menippus of Gadara, sprinkling philosophy with a certain gaiety. The remark distinguishes free imitation from word-for-word translation.
