• Ad Atticum 1.17 §9 Metellus, the consul-elect

  Q. Caecilius Metellus Celer, consul-designate for 60 BC, who alone spoke against the publicani's request. He takes office (and reappears as 'consul') in letter 1.18.

• Ad Atticum 1.20 §5 He wishes, I take it, to triumph

  The consul Metellus Celer, holding Cisalpine Gaul, would lose his chance of a triumph if peace broke out there before he could win a victory; hence his reluctance to welcome news of calm in Gaul.

• For Publius Sulla §65 Quintus Metellus the praetor

  Q. Caecilius Metellus Celer, praetor in 63 and a strong opponent of the conspirators, who announced on Sulla's behalf that Sulla did not want Caecilius's bill carried. He went on to be consul in 60 BC.
