Oroetes

A Persian satrap of Sardis under the Achaemenid kings who lured the tyrant Polycrates of Samos to the mainland and had him crucified. Cicero recalls Polycrates' death at Oroetes' hands in De Finibus 5.92.

Oroetes, Persian satrap of Sardis, treacherously had Polycrates of Samos crucified. Cicero loosely calls him the satrap of Darius (the deed actually fell under Cambyses).
