Publius Nigidius Figulus, praetor in 58 BC, was reckoned after Varro the most learned Roman of his age, a Pythagorean and authority on astrology, divination, and grammar. A committed Pompeian in the civil war, he was condemned and never recalled; he died in exile in 45 BC, so this letter of consolation never achieved its hope of his restoration.
