The letter-heading. The recipient is P. Sulpicius Rufus, then holding the title imperator as proconsul of Illyricum (48-46 BC); he is a different man from the famous orator and tribune of 88 BC of the same name. "S." abbreviates salutem (dicit), "sends greetings."
