In the Peloponnesian War (from 431 BC) Pericles brought the Attic population inside the walls of Athens but did not surrender the city itself; Cicero offers him as the counter-precedent to Themistocles, about fifty years later.

Pericles, the great fifth-century Athenian statesman, was buried in the public cemetery along the road to the Academy. Lucius's detour to it shows the same antiquarian piety the others have confessed.
