  Young Quintus, the small son of Cicero's brother, then in Atticus's care; Atticus's letter has relieved Cicero's anxiety over the boy's health after alarming reports from Chaerippus.

• Ad Atticum 4.7 §3 the boy Cicero

  The young Cicero in Atticus's charge, here again young Quintus (Quintus's son), whom Cicero asks Atticus to keep looking after. The praenomen 'Cicero' for the boy is ambiguous between the two cousins; the editorial tradition takes it as young Quintus.

  Quintus's son Quintus, a small boy in 55 BC, in Atticus's care while his father is in Sardinia.

• Ad Atticum 5.20 §9 I am bidden to give the plain toga to Quintus, your sister's son

  The toga virilis (the plain white 'toga of manhood', toga pura) was assumed at a boy's coming of age, replacing the purple-bordered toga praetexta. Cicero, as guardian and uncle, performs the rite for his nephew young Quintus.

  'Quintus the son' is the writer's own son, Cicero's nephew, who was travelling with the family.

  Quintus's son, young Quintus Cicero (Cicero's nephew), whose education Cicero promises to oversee daily while his father is away in Gaul.
