Q. Caecilius Metellus Creticus, consul 69 BC, conqueror of Crete 68-66, triumphed in 62; he had clashed with Pompey over jurisdiction during the pirate war. Brother of the praetor of 71 BC (Verres's successor in Sicily). He recurs as patron of the Sicilians at Verr. 2.2.36 and as a witness in the Pro Flacco (30, 63). Distinct from his cousin Q. Metellus Celer.

The Cretan War (69–67 BC), fought by Q. Caecilius Metellus Creticus, who was awarded the cognomen Creticus for subduing the island. Nasennius's service here dates his military career to roughly a generation before 43 BC.

Q. Caecilius Metellus Creticus, consul 69 BC: by his proposal Dio of Halaesa was made a Roman citizen, hence his Roman name "Q. Caecilius Dion." The grant was a deliberate signal in the year of Verres's trial.
