Q. Metello consulibus

Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius, consul 80 BC with Sulla, son of Metellus Numidicus, pontifex maximus, victor with Pompey in the Sertorian War, and the patron-figure of the senatorial Sicily of the 80s and 70s. He died c. 63 BC. He is the Metellus of the consulship of 80 cited in the temple-of-Castor narrative at Verr. 2.1.130; widely invoked as exemplum.

Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius, the senior commander in Spain against Sertorius and later pontifex maximus. The conspirator Cethegus had earlier gone to Spain and made an attempt on his life, a sign (Cicero says) of Cethegus's settled criminality.
