Reading notes
- Against Verres, Second Hearing, Book IV §126 Sappho ... by Silanion
Bronze Sappho by Silanion (Athenian, 4th century BC) carried off from the Syracusan prytaneum, with a famous Greek epigram on its base. The empty base with its inscription remained as a mute reproach: the words declared what was missing.
