Athenian statesman and orator (d. 404 BC), one of the Thirty, nicknamed 'the buskin' for shifting allegiances. Cicero (Brutus 29) names him with Alcibiades and Critias.

Theramenes, the Athenian statesman put to death by the Thirty Tyrants in 404 BC; drinking the hemlock, he flung the dregs with a toast 'to the handsome Critias,' his persecutor. Cicero praises his jest in the face of death as proof he did not reckon death an evil.
