Thrasybulus

The Athenian democratic general who went into exile and returned in arms to overthrow the Thirty Tyrants in 403 BC, restoring the democracy. Cicero offers him as the precedent of armed resistance, set against the quietists who survived the Cinnan terror by accommodation.

Thrasybulus was the Athenian democrat who, instead of submitting, went into exile and then returned in arms to overthrow the Thirty Tyrants in 403 BC. He is the counter-precedent to the quietists Philippus and Mucius: armed resistance rather than accommodation.
