Tiberius Gracchus

Tribune of the plebs in 133 BC whose agrarian reforms provoked violent opposition; he was killed in a riot led by P. Cornelius Scipio Nasica. Cicero's optimate sources treated his killing as a legitimate defence of the commonwealth.

In 133 BC the tribune Tiberius Gracchus had his colleague Marcus Octavius deposed by popular vote when Octavius vetoed his land law. Cotta uses the vivid memory of the scene as an example of an 'empty motion' of the mind.
