The large island in the eastern Mediterranean. In 43 BC the republican fleets under Lentulus Spinther the younger and the Cassian squadrons used it as a base in the campaign against Dolabella.

Cyprus, annexed by Rome in 58 BC and attached to the province of Cilicia, was now (47 BC) receiving its own quaestor. As the first to hold the post, Sextilius would set precedents (mos) for his successors, hence Cicero's interest in his conduct.
