The great river of Mesopotamia marking the frontier between Roman Syria and the Parthian empire. Its crossing by Parthian forces in 51 BC is the central event of Cicero's Cilician dispatches (Fam. 15.1–15.3).

The Euphrates was the frontier between Roman Syria and Parthia; while the Parthians remained west of it (on the Roman side) Bibulus stayed shut in his stronghold, in Cicero's pointed contrast with his own activity.
