Mytilene (on Lesbos) and Rhodes were famous centres of Greek rhetoric and philosophy and favoured places of cultured exile; Marcellus was in fact living at Mytilene. Cicero argues that life in Caesar's world is no safer abroad than at Rome, since Caesar's power "embraces the whole globe."
