The catalogue of what Cicero now loathes maps his withdrawal from public life under Caesar's dictatorship: the Forum (the courts) and the Curia (the Senate-house) had been the two arenas of his career. Both are now closed to free political action.

The Curia Hostilia was the ancient Senate-house of Rome, traditionally ascribed to King Tullus Hostilius; it was rebuilt larger after a fire. Piso's aside that the enlarged building seems smaller illustrates the emotive power of old places.
