- Ad Atticum 10.16 §3 set sail from Syracuse on the eighth day before the Kalends of May
Cato, holding Sicily for Pompey, abandoned the island rather than fight Curio's Caesarian force; the date is 24 April 49 BC. Cicero, who thought the position defensible, regarded the withdrawal as a disgrace --- "the shame of Cato."
- On the Ends of Good and Evil §2.92 the tables of Syracuse that Plato so sharply condemns
The proverbially lavish Syracusan banquets (mensae Syracusanae), which Plato criticized in the Republic and his letters as enervating. Cicero contrasts them with the Persians' cress to mark the range of culinary pleasure.
