The deep, dark abyss beneath the earth in Greek myth, lower than Hades, from which Hercules dragged up the three-headed hound Cerberus. The dying Hercules in Cicero's quotation from the Trachiniae recalls hauling the hellhound up from the dark region of Tartarus.
