Euripides's Orestes

The tragedy Orestes by Euripides, first produced in 408 BC. Cicero relates that Socrates asked for its opening lines, on the endurance of human nature, to be repeated when the play was staged.

- Tusculan Disputations §4.63 when Euripides was producing the play \textit{Orestes}, Socrates is said to have called for the first three verses to be repeated
An anecdote that Socrates asked for the opening lines of Euripides' Orestes (on the endurance of human nature) to be encored at its performance. Cicero uses them as a consolatory commonplace.
