The Furies (Furiae, Greek Erinyes) were avenging deities who hounded the guilty, above all those guilty of bloodshed within the family or state. Cicero invokes them to express his sense of being pursued by the curse of civil war wherever he goes.

The Furies (Greek Erinyes), avenging spirits of the underworld; Cicero makes the passions into Furies that folly looses upon human life. The image recurs in Roman moralizing about the torments of conscience and disordered emotion.
