A. Allienus, a legate who in 43 BC led four legions out of Egypt; he handed them over to C. Cassius Longinus in Syria rather than to Dolabella.

A. Allienus held a praetorship in 49 BC and was being pressed to take up a provincial command for Caesar. Cicero notes that the office could fall to him or to one of his fellow praetors --- "anyone will serve."

The letter-heading. The recipient is Aulus Allienus, proconsul; the praenomen "D." transmitted here is a manuscript corruption for "A." (the companion letter 13.78 correctly reads ALLIENO without praenomen, and the man is A. Allienus throughout). PROCOS. abbreviates proconsul, a former magistrate governing a province with consular authority.
