person
Achilles
also: Achilli
Foremost Greek hero of the Trojan War. Cicero cites Homer's dying Hector foretelling to Achilles his own death close at hand as an instance of presentiment.
Reading notes
- Tusculan Disputations §1.105 Achilles drags Hector, bound to his chariot
The scene from Iliad 22-24 of Achilles dragging Hector's corpse behind his chariot before Troy. Cicero quotes tragic verse (Andromache's lament and an Achilles of Accius) to argue that the mutilated body is no longer 'Hector' and feels nothing.
- Tusculan Disputations §3.18 Achilles complains in Homer
The hero of the Iliad, whose wrath at the loss of his prize Briseis (Iliad 1) opens the poem. The quoted lines render his swelling heart as a diseased, distended state of soul.
