Younger orator and politician; Cicero's protege; defendant in Pro Caelio (4 April 56 BC), the famous Clodia speech; later a correspondent in the Ad Familiares.

The "Caelian" matter is some scheme reported by M. Caelius Rufus, here used as a cipher to keep the plan to slip away and join Pompey out of unfriendly hands. Cicero's letters of these weeks are deliberately allusive for fear of interception.
